Four School of Computer Science faculty members received Amazon AWS AI Research Awards to support their work on open-source tools and research that benefit machine learning. The grants also support research that uses machine learning tools on Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as AWS AI Services or AWS ML Services.

Faculty members receiving awards include:

• Zhihao Jia, an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department, for his project, "Toward Affordable and Accessible ML by Leveraging Heterogeneous Spot Instances,"
• Pradeep Ravikumar and Andrej Risteski, both faculty in the Machine Learning Department, for their project, "Causal and Deep Out-of-Distribution Learning," and
• Shinji Watanabe, an associate professor in the Language Technologies Institute, for his project, "Non-Autoregressive Conversational Speech Recognition."

Recipients of Amazon Research Awards have access to more than 300 Amazon public data sets and can use AWS services and tools. They also consult with an Amazon research contact and have the opportunity to participate in Amazon events and training sessions.
